An 18-year-old gunman shot his grandmother before he continued his rampage at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas on May 24, opening fire and killing 19 children and two adults. The attack in Uvalde – a small Texan community about an hour from the Mexican border – is the latest in a spree of deadly shootings in the United States, where widespread horror at gun violence has failed to spur action to head off future killings.

Noelia Morales, the grandmother of a survivor, shares the terrifying moment of the children's escape. Meanwhile, community members of the elementary school, shooting victims and survivors speak out against gun violence in schools.

Nearly 20 officers stood in a hallway outside classrooms during this week's attack on the Texas elementary school for more than 45 minutes before agents used a master key to open a door and confront the gunman, authorities said on Friday.

The on-site commander believed the gunman, 18-year-old Salvador Ramos, was barricaded in a classroom at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde during Tuesday's attack and that the children were not at risk, Texas Department of Public Safety Director Steven McCraw said at a news conference.

"Of course it was not the right decision. It was the wrong decision," he added.

A group of protesters angered over the shooting deaths of Texas elementary school students converged Friday outside the National Rifle Association (NRA)'s annual convention in Houston.

The protesters held crosses with photos of shooting victims and shouted, "NRA go away," and "Shame, it could be your kids today," as hundreds of members of the nation's biggest gun lobby arrived at the convention hall.

"The existence of evil in our world is not a reason to disarm law-abiding citizens," former U.S. President Donald Trump told the audience to cheers, echoing speakers who rejected background checks or bans on semiautomatic weapons.

Trump accused Democrats of trying to exploit the tragedy and demonizing gun owners. He called for overhauling school security and the nation's approach to mental health, and called yet again for trained teachers to be able to carry concealed weapons in classrooms.

Republican Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick dropped out of making in-person remarks at the event. Patrick said he withdrew so as not to "bring any additional pain or grief to the families and all the suffering in Uvalde.”

In a pre-recorded video, Abbott said, "as Texans and as Americans we grieve and mourn with these families." But he said existing gun laws did not stop the Uvalde shooter and pushed back at calls for new legislation, saying "laws will not stop evil madmen from committing these atrocities.”
